The two providers--DirecTV and Dish Network--both claim to offer more than 250 channels. Except for premium channels such as HBO or special sports services such as DirecTV's Sunday Ticket, you can't buy individual channels separately. Instead, you need to choose from various bundles of channels. If sports is your ticket, for example, one of the basic packages from either service will usually deliver ESPN and ESPN2, but if you need more racing or golf, you'll need to find a package that includes The Golf Channel or the Speed channel.

The best way to get the the channels or package you want depends on whether you're a new or existing customer. If you're new to satellite TV, or you're switching from one provider to another, you'll need to pick your programming with a customer service representative over the phone when you sign up. Just be sure to know what you want--and have it written down--before you begin the process. It's easy to get talked into getting a programming package you don't want or need.

While you'll need to purchase individual channels through packages, the premium movie channels like HBO and Showtime are available individually. You'll get a price break if you get a bundle of premium channels. If you're a new customer, you're in luck, because both providers almost always offer a package of premium channels free to new subscribers, usually for three months.

Both Dish Network and DirecTV have been expanding high-definition programming at a rapid pace. These channels, too, are available as packages, and are usually grouped together in HD bundles.

Tips & Warnings
If you're not happy with your current satellite provider, the other guys are anxious to hear from you. Switch services and you'll get all the price breaks and benefits of a new customer.
If you're getting a free package of premium channels--usually a bonus for new customers--remember to check the time period for the free offer. You'll start getting billed for the package after the promotional period ends, whether you want it or not.
