How to Make Tuffeted Cushions
A tufted cushion can add something special to a sofa, bed or chair. There is a vast variety of buttons to pick from to make your cushion different. You can choose a button that will draw attention to it or pick one that will blend in with the pillow. This project is so quick you will be tempted to make many and even tuft a store-bought pillow. Things You'll Need
- Fabric
- Thread
- Needle
- Sewing machine
- 12-by-12 inch foam pillow
- Shank or regular button

Cut two squares of fabric measuring 13 by 13 inches.

Place the two squares of fabric together with right-sides facing each other. Pin fabric on three sides to secure.

Machine-stitch around three edges of the squares using a 1-inch seam allowance.

Turn your fabric to show right sides facing out. Stuff the pillow into the square.

Turn under a 1-inch seam allowance and hand-stitch from corner to corner to close up the pillow.

Locate the center of the pillow, and with needle and thread pull the thread from back to front and back again. Leave a tail of 7 inches, then knot the thread. Pull the thread from back and front four more times.

Slide the needle through the button and pull the needle through to the underside of the pillow. Attach the second button with the needle and continue to sew the buttons onto the pillow. End with the needle on the same side of the pillow that has the 7-inch tail of thread. Secure the tail with the thread on the needle and cut off extra thread.

Tips & Warnings
You can also use a button that has holes that show. It is a little easier to attach than a shank button.
