Plaster is one of the best materials for making models. It sets quickly and adheres well to itself, which helps you to build a model in layers. Plaster can be used with other materials, such as latex and rubber. You can also carve intricate details into plaster or paint it with acrylic paint once it has set. Cinderella's castle at Disney World and Disneyland makes a perfect subject for a plaster model.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide the scale of your model. Scale is the ratio of the model size to the size of the actual piece you are copying. A scale of 1/24 would mean that it would take 24 of your models to equal the actual size of the subject. Use a scale chart to determine the ratio. (see Resources).

Use craft sticks to build the skeleton structure of the castle. Work from a reference photo and build a rough version of the castle. This structure is the base you will work from. Glue the structure together with wood glue and allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Cover your entire structure with newspaper. The newspaper gives you a starting point for the first layer of plaster. Shape the newspaper as tightly around your skeleton model as you can, retaining the shape of the underlying structure. Secure the newspaper with drops of glue.

Mix your plaster in small batches. It dries quickly. You can buy plaster at a hobby shop. Follow the mixing directions on the container. Typically, the mix will be two parts water to one part plaster.

    • 5

Smooth on the first layer of plaster with a flat tool. A chisel or a wooden stir stick will work. Cover the entire model with a layer of plaster and smooth it with your application tool. Let it dry for a half-hour before applying the next coat.

    • 6

Build the plaster in layers. Apply one layer and let it dry, then add another layer. Shape the layers of plaster to the general initial shape of your skeleton structure as you go. Don't rush the project at this point. Plaster adheres well to itself and building in layers will make your castle sturdy. It will take several layers before you see the density you need.

Use a small chisel and etching tool (available at hobby and craft shops) to detail the rough structure. Work from your reference photo, adding details of the castle. Use a file and sandpaper to modify the rough shape of the castle until you've defined it.

Finish your Cinderella castle with acrylic paint. Add a clear spray gloss to seal the model.
