How to Create a Geisha Costume

A geisha costume is both flattering and dramatic. With its long lines, high color and sophisticated style, it never fails to draw compliments from other party goers. Follow these steps to create your own geisha costume.

  • Kimono robe
  • White makeup
  • Mascara
  • Black eyeliner
  • Red lipstick
  • White ankle socks
  • Platform flip-flops
  • Chopsticks
  • Hairband
  • Hair pins
  • Paper umbrella or fan

Instructions

      Put on kimono robe, white socks and flip-flops. You can also add an obi to the costume to make it more realistic (see Resources).

      Pull hair up into a loose ponytail, then pin it into a loose bun. Push chopsticks through bun. Geisha typically wear elaborate hair ornaments. Pin strands of small beads or hanging silk flowers like wisteria in your hair.

      Cover entire face and neck with white makeup.

      Apply mascara to eyelashes, then outline the edges of eyelids with liner.

      Apply red lipstick to the center of lips, and cover the corners with white makeup.

      Add fan to accessorize.
