How to Configure Mozilla Thunderbird for Yahoo! Mail

Mozilla Thunderbird is a popular email program from the same company that created the Firefox Web browser. Because it's a free download and offers a wide variety of features, Thunderbird is growing in popularity as an alternative to Microsoft's Outlook and Apple's Safari email programs. If you have a Yahoo! Mail Plus account, it's easy to set up Thunderbird to check your email without your Web browser.

Instructions

    Setting Up Your Account

  1. Step 1

    Open Mozilla Thunderbird.

  2. Step 2

    Go to the "File" menu and choose "New" > "Account..." and click "Continue."

  3. Step 3

    Type your name and email address in the appropriate fields. Click "Continue."

  4. Step 4

    Type "plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com" in the "Incoming Server:" field and "plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com" in the "Outgoing Server:" field. Click "Continue."

  5. Step 5

    Add your Yahoo! user name in the "Incoming User Name" and "Outgoing User Name" fields. Click "Continue."

  6. Step 6

    Enter a name for the account in the "Account Name:" field. Click "Continue."

  7. Step 7

    Verify that your settings are correct, then click "OK" and you're finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • Copy and paste the incoming and outgoing server addresses to be sure they're correct.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird will only work with Yahoo! Mail Plus accounts that offer POP access. It will not work with free Yahoo! email accounts.
