There are a few types of shower pans that do not accept tile well, namely fiberglass and acrylic, but some of the do-it-yourself constructed shower pans are ideal for tiling. Make sure to build a leak-proof shower pan using a strong mortar base with a solid vinyl membrane liner, because tile and grout do not keep water in. The tile adds to the aesthetic value of the shower, not to the structural support.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ceramic tile
  • Thin-set mortar
  • Spatula
  • Wet saw
  • Non-sanded grout
  • Small rubber trowel
  • Rag
  • Sealer
  1. Step 1

Start installing shower pan tile at the center of the base near the drain. An ideal shower pan tile is 4-inches by 4-inches. If you need to cut the tile, use a wet saw.

  2. Step 2

Use a thin-set spreading spatula and spread the thin set mortar on the back of the tile.

  3. Step 3

Apply the tile to the pan and press down firmly for about 10 seconds. The mortar on the shower pan and the thin-set works together to keep the tile in place.

  4. Step 4

Continue placing tile over your shower pan, and up the short side walls, working out from the drain. Leave an 1/8-inch gap between all tiles for grout.

  5. Step 5

Allow the tiles to set for 24 to 48 hours. Apply a bead of non-sanded grout to the gaps between the tiles with a small rubber trowel. Use a wet rag to wipe up any excess.

  6. Step 6

Apply a sealer to prevent moisture from seeping through the grout.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a tile for your shower pan that is slip resistant. You can buy a pre-mixed grout in a tube for more money. You can rent or purchase a tile cutter at any home store.
  • Wipe up all the excess grout from the tiles before it dries.
