How to Frame a Tapestry
Some may mount tapestry on a wall with rods and brackets, while others prefer framing it like a picture. It is possible to frame tapestry, but before you do so consider aspects such as color, size and placement. A framed tapestry is a great addition to any living room or bedroom, and gives the place a certain elegance and charm.

Measure your tapestry. This is a very important factor to consider because a lot of frames and stretchers have a fixed size, such as 13x72 inches or 18x24 inches. Art framers will find it easier to get you a frame that fits your tapestry if you know the dimensions before starting the search for a frame.

Pick a frame that will suit your tapestry, in terms of color and theme. Since tapestries tend to be thicker than pictures, you need to purchase a deeper frame than normal. Gilded, neoclassical frames are popular with tapestries, but there are also more modern selections available in frame shops.

Use matting. Matting serves as the border for your tapestry, which gives it a more elegant look than just fitting it into a frame. Specialty art stores carry colored matting for your canvas. Cream, gold and deep browns work well with tapestry that are earthy in color.

Lay the tapestry on a flat surface and attach it to the matting. Make sure you go over the surface over the tapestry and press it firmly on the matting, to make your finished product smoother and to avoid any fabric wrinkling. You may use glue to secure the tapestry onto the matting. Others use fabric staplers to secure the tapestry on a sturdier matting. Trim the sides to make it an exact fit.

Place the tapestry and matting into the frame. Depending on the kind of frame you bought, you may have to assemble the frame around the tapestry. If you bought a frame that is a solid size, you just have to carefully insert the tapestry into the frame. The matting will make it easier to insert the tapestry into the frame.

Lay the frame on a flat surface, back side up. Hold the two top corners of the matting and the tapestry. With the back side of the matting facing you (and the tapestry is attached on the front of the matting), carefully insert them into the frame, corner by corner. Afterward, insert the backing to seal the matting and tapestry. The matting and tapestry are now securely placed inside the frame.
