How to Make Kitchen Fruit Decorations

Fruit decor is a popular theme for kitchens. While there are many commercially available fruit-themed kitchen fruit decorations, not everybody likes to decorate their homes with mass-produced, readily available products. If you're crafty and want to decorate your kitchen with images of fruit, you can make kitchen fruit decorations for your home.

Things You'll Need

• Acrylic paint
• Clear spray sealant (glossy)
• Solid colored kitchen clock
• Newspaper
• Flour
• Water
• Plain canisters, in a solid color
• Sculpy clay
• Ball chain

Instructions

1. Remove the light switch plates and outlet covers from the kitchen. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol to clean them and remove any oils. Use the acrylic paints to paint images of fruit on them. Allow the paint to dry for several hours. Spray with clear spray sealant to seal and protect the paint, and allow them to dry overnight.

2. Clean the canisters with rubbing alcohol to remove all body oils from them. Paint fruit images on these. Consider painting a different fruit on each canister. Bake these in the oven at 150 degrees for three hours to heat set the paint. After three hours, turn off the oven and allow the canisters to cool along with the oven.

3. Take the clock apart and paint fruit onto the face. Allow to dry before reassembling and mounting the clock.

4. Mix flour and water to make a runny paste and make faux fruit with papier-mache. Allow these pieces to dry for several days, then paint with acrylic paints. Seal with spray sealant to protect the pieces. Place these pieces in a bowl and set them on the counter.

5. Remove all of the knobs from cabinets and drawers, and paint fruits on them. Seal with spray sealant to protect the paint.

6. Use Sculpy clay to make a miniature fruit of your choice. Before baking according to the instructions, push an inch of ball chain into the top of the fruit and pinch it securely into place. After it's baked, attach the ball chain to the ceiling fan.
