How to Paint Texture With an Airbrush
Airbrush painting is a technique that can be used to paint any type of medium, whether you are just layering a base coat or applying detail. It takes practice and time, but anyone who regularly paints with an airbrush can learn to create texture with the painting technique.

- Material or object to be painted
- Airbrush paint in desired colors
- Airbrush gun
- Painter's tape, if desired
- Gloves/Protective eyewear/Face mask

1
Make sure you have an airbrushing area that is set up somewhere that is well-ventilated and covered. Use newspaper or canvas material to shield the surfaces whether it be a garage, basement, or driveway floor. Set up your materials and keep them close by, as when you airbrush paint, it may dry quickly.

2
Put strong pressure on the airbrush trigger for a thicker flow of paint. This will build up quickly and either run or drip, which will create different textures. Put less pressure on the airbrush trigger for small spurts of paint, and light spackling. Use thick cloths, paper towels, cotton balls, sponges, etc. to dab onto the paint to create texture.

Use props to create layering and texture. You can hold magazine pages against to your material or object you are airbrushing, and airbrush paint around the corners to create sharp edges of paint. You can also try this with thicker materials. Work one color at a time, letting each layer dry before airbrushing the next one.

Try techniques with wrist movements. Airbrush paint in one place, than, slowly rotate or sway your wrist to create overlapping layers of airbrush paint that will appear to go from thick to thin. Do this in wider circles or shapes until you get the effect you desire.

5
Overlap airbrush painting you have already done and let dry with different layers. Create a shadowing effect by laying another coat of paint on certain angles of pictures, faces, shapes, or graphics. Just follow the lines of the right or left side (the side depends upon what side you want to create the illusion of lighting), with short strokes of your wrist while holding down the airbrush trigger lightly. Keep overlapping shades until you get the desired effect.
