"Convergence" in terms of television describes when the three projectors in a TV that produce color fall out of sync with each other. You'll know a TV with bad convergence when you see it--colors aren't meshing and are represented as thick lines, and everything seems blurry. Adjusting the convergence on a Toshiba television isn't difficult; there is a setting in the menu that you can calibrate. When that doesn't correct the issue, fixing the convergence on a Toshiba television can be quite a bit harder.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement convergence chips
  • Soldering iron
  1. Step 1

Disconnect your television from all peripheral devices (DVD players, cable boxes) and the wall. Move your TV out from the wall far enough where you'll have room to move around, and remove the back panel.

  2. Step 2

Find the PC board. This is the device containing all the components that tell your TV how to operate, and it looks very similar to a standard motherboard found on a personal computer.

  3. Step 3

Locate the convergence chips. There will be two of them, and they'll be plugged into sockets and screwed securely into place on the PC board. Unscrew them from the board and pull them off.

  4. Step 4

Put your new convergence chips in the slots where the old ones were found. Depending on your model of Toshiba television, this may require some soldering to get them in place. Screw them securely onto the PC board using the screw from the old chips.

  5. Step 5

Put the back panel back onto the TV. Once you've replaced the convergence chips, you can now move your TV back against the wall, turn it on and calibrate your convergence chips using the on-screen directions through your TV's main menu.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your model of Toshiba television requires you to solder the convergence chips back on and you don't feel comfortable doing this, do not proceed. You can severely damage your television if you're not careful.
