How to Install Crown Molding Around a Door

Crown molding is molding designed to act as a trim along the ceiling, to be installed along the angle where the ceiling and wall meet. Not all crown moldings can be used to trim out a door. The shape of some crown moldings requires a second perpendicular surface (the ceiling) to support the design. Because the wall around a door is a flat plane, that is, there is no adjoining perpendicular surface, that group of crown moldings is unsuitable for installing around a door. Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside dimensions of the door frame. Measure first one side of the door frame, then the other. Make a note if the heights are slightly different, as this will affect how you make cuts. Measure the inside dimension of the top frame as well.

    • 2

Add 1/4 inch to each side measurement and 1/2 inch to the measurement of the top frame.

    • 3

Mark the molding according to the measurements. You need to allow for a 45 degree cut on the two pieces for the side door frames, and two 45-degree cuts for the top piece.

    • 4

Start with the molding to be used for the hinge side of the door frame. Mark the needed length of the molding. Using a protractor, mark the 45-degree angle from the inside of the molding. Repeat for the molding for the other side of the door frame, with this angle being cut opposite of the first piece.

    • 5

Cut two 45-degree angles at both ends of the piece for the top of the door. These should be cut opposite of each other so as to fit with the angle cuts of the sidepieces.

    • 6

Tack the three pieces of molding into place. Using only two to three nails for each piece fit the moldings into place around the door. The cuts should fit together at both corners at the top of the door.

    • 7

Make any adjustments needed to ensure the three pieces fit snugly around the door frame. Use finishing nails to secure the molding to the frame and to the wall. Fill in any holes with wood putty and stain or paint as needed.
