A DJ, also known as a disc jockey or a deejay, is a person who chooses and plays music for an audience. This music is prerecorded, which is why a DJ differs from an MC, who usually introduces live musical acts. During a wedding, the DJ will usually introduce songs and chat during breaks. In hip-hop, the DJ mixes one or more songs together using turntables, which requires more skill. A radio DJ introduces each song on air and picks the flow of music throughout the hour. A DJ in reggae music talks over songs that are chosen by someone else. Whether you're a trained DJ or a novice, it can be difficult to get your foot in the door as a DJ in New York City.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Songs on vinyl, CD or in digital format
  • Business cards
  • Portable audio system
  • Headphones
  • Microphone
  • DJ mixer
  • Turntables
  1. Step 1

Create a website. Whether you are a seasoned DJ or you're just starting out, it's important to have a place for potential clients to contact you and know which songs you offer. Popular website hosts include Dot Easy and Go Daddy.

  2. Step 2

Build an audio collection. It is crucial for a DJ, no matter where he is located, to have a large library of music, whether it be on vinyl, CD or in digital format. For a New York DJ, it is especially important to go to New York clubs and bars and see what is being played. Most likely, this is what will be requested.

  3. Step 3

Get business cards and pass them out to bars, clubs and wedding planners. Once you have a website set up, spread the word in person. Most bars and clubs in New York have some sort of DJ night once per week to bring in a new audience.

  4. Step 4

Spread the word. Don't limit yourself to Manhattan. As a New York City DJ, it is important to make your services known in Brooklyn, especially Williamsburg, and in Queens, especially Astoria. If you limit yourself to only Manhattan, you will be cutting off at least 50 percent of potential clients.

  5. Step 5

Invest in equipment. This includes a portable audio system, headphones, microphone, DJ audio mixer and turntables. Once you have a commitment booked, make sure you have the equipment necessary to fulfill the commitment properly. Discuss with the bar owner or wedding planner exactly what music he would like played, and bring lots of extra music in case of requests.

Tips & Warnings
  • Provide a list of your song library online.
  • Store your equipment in a locked, dry area.
