Things You'll Need:
- Cake mix to make two round cake pans, and required ingredients
- Two round cake pans (8" or 9")
- White cake frosting
- Neon green food coloring
- Junior Mints or similar round chocolate candies
- Hershey's kisses
- Two chocolate chips
- Six or eight green M & Ms candies
-
Step 1
Bake the two round cakes according to the directions on the box. Allow the cakes to cool completely for a few hours. (Frosting a cake when it is warm could cause it to crumble and crack.)
-
Step 2
Cut a sliver off the edge of one of the circle cakes. Make this cut 1" if you're using an 8" cake pan, and 2" if you're using a 9" cake pan. You can discard this piece, as you will not need it to make your dinosaur birthday cake.
-
Step 3
Make a semi-circle cut out of the flat-bottom edge. This will create the lower edge of the belly and the two chubby legs of your dinosaur. There is no exact measurement for this cut. Just cut as high and wide as you want. A lower and narrower cut results in chubbier legs, while a high and wide cut will result in long, skinny legs.
-
Step 4
Cut the dinosaur tail and head from the second round cake, referring to the illustration. If you have a specific kind of dinosaur in mind, you can alter the head and tail to suit your own plans.
-
Step 5
Fit the dinosaur body and legs cake with the head and tail. Use a knife to trim to create a better fit if you need to.
-
Step 6
Put a thin layer of white icing on the entire cake. This is called the crumb layer, and will help you keep the outer layer of frosting free of messy-looking crumbs.
-
Step 7
Place the cake in the freezer for half an hour to allow the crumb layer to set completely. While the cake is in the freezer, mix the remaining white icing with neon green food coloring, until it is a shade of green that you're happy with.
-
Step 8
Remove the cake from the freezer. Frost it with the green frosting immediately. Smooth out the frosting with an offset spatula.
-
Step 9
Put spots on the dinosaur by placing the round chocolate candies all over the body.
-
Step 10
Use the M&M candies as toe nails for your dinosaur birthday cake.
-
Step 11
Use the Hershey's chocolate kisses to create spikes on the back and tail of the dinosaur birthday cake.
-
Step 12
Apply the two chocolate chips to the dinosaur birthday cake's face, to serve as chocolate eyes.
