Swim spas are the latest addition to the pool and spa lineup. Many people want a pool for its exercise benefits, but not everyone wants the maintenance of a full-sized pool. Most neighborhoods these days tend to have small back yards, and for these homeowners, a typical pool is not an option. A swim spa is a perfect combination of exercise and fun. Once you learn about your options, choosing a swim spa will be as enjoyable as using one.

Things You'll Need:

  • Pool and spa magazines (or websites) Bathing suit
  1. Step 1

Read about the industry's trends, options and features using pool- and spa-specific magazines and websites. The websites of swim spa manufacturers have some valuable information. A particularly good website for researching all things related to pools and spas is www.poolspaliving.com. From these sources, you will learn all about features, costs, maintenance, chemical requirements and space requirements.

  2. Step 2

Determine how you intend to use the swim spa. Will you be engaging in intensive workouts, or is it more likely that you and your family will be using it for relaxation purposes? The two uses are not mutually exclusive, but you may want to focus on certain features if you plan to use your swim spa for a specific purpose.

  3. Step 3

Consider whether a stereo system would add to your enjoyment of your workout or relaxing time. Stereo systems are available for swim spas that allow you to hear your chosen music while your head is underwater as well as above water.

  4. Step 4

Go to your local swim spa dealer with your bathing suit and get into a few swim spas for a test. Wet tests are common and expected, so do not feel weird about walking into a store with your bathing suit in hand. If you plan to do heavy workouts, check to see which of the common water current generators (propeller, jet or paddle wheel) best suits your swimming technique. If you envision yourself enjoying leisurely soaks in your swim spa, make sure that the bench configuration and jet placements target the areas of your body you most want to hit with the jets.

  5. Step 5

Consider factors such as energy efficiency, size, color and installation issues. Your local swim spa dealer will be able to advise you on these topics.

  6. Step 6

Determine whether you need to finance your new swim spa. Nearly all swim spa dealers can help you find financing for your project, if you do not have the cash in hand.
