Many digital camcorders today use small Mini DV tapes rather than the old-fashioned, bigger tapes of the past. The convenience of using these smaller tapes means that you can more easily carry around backups with you. Adding to the convenience is that Mini DV tapes are very easy to swap out.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the wrapping from the Mini DV case. This may actually be the hardest part of the entire operation as the shrink wrap that encases a Mini DV tends to be very tight and you are working with a very small package. Get a pair of scissors or a knife and carefully slice open the shrink wrap if you have difficulty.

  2. Step 2

Press the eject button on your camcorder. The eject button may be located on the side or the bottom. Take the tape that has already been used out of the cartridge slot. Immediately place it into the jewel case of the new tape and then label it so you'll know it has been used and what exists on the tape.

  3. Step 3

Insert the new Mini DV tape into the slot. When you peer into the slot you will see one side slides back down onto the interior machinery of the camcorder. Insert the Mini DV so that the holes on the back are placed so that they will fit into that machinery when you close it.

  4. Step 4

Press down on the tape slot to close it. Turn on the camcorder and place it in camera mode. Press record to use your new Mini DV tape.
