How to Hang a Hammock Indoors
You usually think about hanging a hammock outdoors--all you need is two trees out in your yard--or, better yet, on a Hawaiian island. But, it's also relaxing to have a hammock indoors. It takes a little more work, but you can secure one to a wall or hang it from the ceiling. If you have the space, you can go an easier route and use a hammock stand. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Ice pick or hammer and nail
- Drill with 1/4-inch bit
- 3/8-inch eye-bolt lag screws
- S-hooks
- Rope
Instructions

1
Mark a height on two walls that will allow your hammock a clearance of 3 to 4 feet underneath. Later, when you sit in the hammock, your body weight will lower it further.
-
2
Find the center of the studs from which you'll hang the hammock. To find a stud, tap the wall until you hear a solid sound--a different tone from the surrounding area. To find the center of the stud, use an ice pick or a hammer and nail. Poke around the stud to the right and left to learn where the wood ends.

3
Drill a small hole and insert an eye-bolt lag screw (it looks like a screw with a metal ring at the end of it) when you've found the center of the stud Turn it until the threads are completely in the wall.
-
4
Attach the S-hooks into the metal rings on each eye-bolt lag screw and attach the hammock to the other part of the S. If your walls are too far apart, you may need to add rope to attach the hammock.
-
5
Tug on the hammock before you sit in it to make sure everything is secure.

Tips & Warnings
If you prefer, you can hang your hammock from the ceiling beams instead of the wall studs. The same principles apply. As an alternative, buy and assemble a hammock stand.
