Play a G-Chord on the Guitar

If you're interested in learning guitar and guitar chords then you've come to the right place. This article will teach you how to play an "open" G-chord on the guitar. This is one of the first chords that many guitarists learn.

Instructions

  1. Playing a G-Chord

    • 1

Tune your 6-string acoustic or electric guitar using an electronic tuner, keyboard or piano. The notes of the strings on the guitar should be tuned to E, A, D, G, B, E. This is from low to high, or from the fattest string on the guitar to the skinniest. When using a keyboard or piano to tune your guitar, start from the E note below middle C on the keyboard or piano.

    • 2

Place your third (ring) finger directly behind the third fret on the first string of the guitar. Frets are the metal ridges on the fingerboard of the guitar. The fret closest to the headstock (with the tuning knobs) is the first fret, the next fret going down toward the body of the guitar is the second fret and so on. The first string is the one closest to your lap, and the sixth string is the string closest to your face when holding the guitar in playing position.

    • 3

Place your first (index) finger directly behind the second fret on the fifth string of the guitar.

    • 4

Place your second (middle) finger directly behind the third fret on the sixth string of the guitar.

    • 5

Strum all six strings on the guitar with your strumming hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before strumming your entire chord, try playing one string at a time to make sure each note sounds loud and clear.
