How to Install a Grand Am Radio

The Ponitac Grand Am is a small sports sedan/coupe produced by the Pontiac division of General Motors. In its most popular incarnation, it was produced from 1985 to 2005. The Grand Am came equipped with a stereo of varying capabilities (cassette, CD) depending on the trim level of the vehicle. The different radios can be switched from one car to another to improve capabilities, or you can install a replacement radio if the existing model doesn't function.

Instructions

    • 1

Eject any tapes or CDs from the old radio, then turn off the power to the radio.

    • 2

Pry off the trim ring around the ignition switch with a small, flat-bladed screwdriver. The ignition switch trim ring is on the main instrument panel, so it will impede the removal of the trim panel you'll be removing in Step 3 if you don't take it off.

    • 3

Pry around the edges of the trim panel that surrounds the receiver with a panel tool. When the panel is loose, pull it off, and disconnect any wiring plugs attached to it. Set the panel aside.

    • 4

Undo the four bolts holding the radio in place. Slide the radio out, and unplug the wiring harness and antenna plug.

    • 5

Plug the antenna plug and the wiring connector into the new Grand Am radio, and insert it into the radio opening. Replace the screws to hold the radio in place. Turn on the power and test the radio.

    • 6

Plug the connectors back onto the trim panel and snap it back into place, then snap the ignition switch trim back into place.
