How to Change a Car Registration When Moving Out of State

Keep in mind that each state has its own rules and regulations concerning motor vehicle registration and that you must contact the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to get the most accurate and up to date information.

Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles before you move. Some states have special regulations concerning what you must do before you transfer your registration. Before your move, contact the local DMV and ask them if there is anything special you need to do before moving.

Contact your new DMV after moving. Ask them what is required in that state to transfer your registration. Some states have vehicle emissions and/or inspection standards that must be met and reviewed before they will issue a new registration. The DMV office can advise you of this and offer you suggestions as to where you can get the emissions/inspections done.

Transfer your driver's license and insurance to the new state. Some states require an in-state license and proof of insurance before they will issue a registration. If you can't do it in one visit, have your driver's license moved to the new state and advise your insurance company of your new address and ask them to send you proof of coverage with your new address.

Inspect your car. Even if your state does not have emissions control or certified inspection standards, the DMV may review the vehicle for road-worthiness before issuing a new registration. If emissions control inspection or mechanical inspection are required, get them done before applying for the new registration. Otherwise, make sure your car is road-worthy. This includes the headlights and tail lights are working, the brakes are functional, all rear view mirrors are in place and the vehicle is mechanically sound (such as not excessively smoking or backfiring).

Go to the DMV. Once there, apply for your new registration. Bring along your checkbook or cash, as some DMVs do not accept credit cards.
