Cutting oval glass should only be done in a safe environment while wearing protective gear such as gloves and protective eyewear. It may be difficult if the glass is thick, but with the correct procedure it can help make pieces of glass for art projects, stained glass and for use in other windows.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solid flat surface in area safe for cutting glass
  • Gloves
  • Protective eyewear
  • Thick towel
  • Clamps
  • Oval glass
  • Glass cutters
  • Glass pliers
  • Straight edge
  • Sandpaper
  • Olive oil with a soft bristle brush
  1. Step 1

Find an area where it will be safe to cut glass, such as a garage. Make sure to always wear your protective eyewear, gloves and even a protective face mask. You never know if glass will fly from the cutters.

  2. Step 2

Cover the area with the thick towel, which will act as padding. Place the glass onto this padded surface, then secure the straight edge to the glass with a clamp where you want to cut the glass. Keep it along the curve of the oval as much as possible in order to cut it.

  3. Step 3

Apply a layer of olive oil to the area of the oval glass that you want to cut, with the soft bristled brush. This helps lubricate the area.

  4. Step 4

Hold the glass cutter tightly and make one firm solid cut at the point in the oval glass. It is important to do this step carefully, slowly and firmly so you can cut the glass as accurately as possible, and also with the least amount of debris. Remove the clamp and the straight edge. Then take either side of the oval glass in each hand, and pull upwards to apply pressure to the cut area. Snap it apart.

  5. Step 5

Use the glass pliers to help break smaller pieces or chunks out of the oval glass. Use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the oval glass. If you are trying to create another oval shape, use 600-grit sandpaper to round it out as smoothly as possible.
