Step 1
Determine your eligibility. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship of Australia website has information on different circumstances that can permit dual citizenship. For example, you can have dual citizenship if you are a permanent resident of the country and still are maintaining your citizenship in a country that allows dual citizenship.
-
Step 2
Take the citizenship test if you have migrated to Australia. Before accepting your dual citizenship application, you will need to take a citizenship exam. The Australian citizenship exam has 20 multiple-choice questions and three short-answer questions. You can sign up for the test through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of Australia.
-
Step 3
Fill in the appropriate citizenship form for your circumstance. For example, you are required to complete Citizenship by Descent Form Number 118 through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship if your parents were Australian citizens. You need to give your residency details and citizenship information for the other country.
-
Step 4
Provide penal clearance from the other country that you are a citizen. You will need to contact your country's federal law enforcement agency to provide this document that certifies you have been free of any felony convictions for the past 10 years.

Step 5
Pay the application fee and await approval. You will be notified of acceptance, then required to attend an Australian citizenship ceremony within 12 months of the date of notification.
