To cancel an AOL account and AOL service, the account information for the user needs to be located. There are a few pieces of account information that need to be located to successfully cancel the service account.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Locating AOL Internet Service Account Information

  1. Step 1

Start AOL on the computer and sign into the AOL account you would like to cancel.

  2. Step 2

Locate the "My Account" area on the main browser page and click on "My Account."

  3. Step 3

Locate the billing name and address AOL has on file. Locate the user name of the account (or accounts) you want to cancel. Write down this information. If there is an account number listed on the page, write that down as well.

  4. Canceling AOL Service (Call or Mail)

  5. Step 1

Cancel the account through a phone call or through postal mail. AOL does not offer an online method to cancel an account. Have the information you wrote down available while calling AOL or typing a request.

  6. Step 2

Call 1-800-827-6364 to speak with an AOL representative. When prompted, say "cancellation." The automated system will connect you to an operator. If asked why you are canceling, say you no longer need the service and will be canceling the account.

  7. Step 3

Type a request letter to AOL to have the account canceled. Include the billing address, billing name, telephone number and user name. If available, include the account number as well. Send the typed letter to AOL at:

    America Online
    P.O. Box 17100
    Jacksonville, Florida 32245-7100

  8. Step 4

Verify the AOL account has been closed. This might take up to 72 hours after the request is received to take effect. Do not log into the AOL account or access the Internet through the AOL account after the request has been made. This can result in additional charges. Check your bank account or credit card statement to ensure charges from AOL no longer are appearing. AOL will send a confirmation letter to the billing address once the account has been closed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Locate all account information before calling or sending a letter to AOL. Try to cancel the account just before the billing period ends to avoid being charged for another month of service. If asked on the phone why you are canceling service, repeat that you would like the account to be canceled.
  • Do not access or log in to the account after canceling or additional charges might be billed to you.
