Become a Field Tester for Hunting Equipment

With over 12 million hunters in the United States, it's not surprising why some hunters want to become field testers for hunting equipment. Field testers have the opportunity to try out new gear and products---and oftentimes keep the merchandise for free.

Many companies who manufacture hunting equipment use field testers to assess their products. Similarly, the North American Hunting Club offers their members a chance to test out various hunting and fishing equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Build your experience. Before you become a field tester, you should have significant experience as a hunter. Obtain the proper hunting license your state requires and hunt as often as possible. Read hunting magazines and visit hunting websites to stay up-to-date on the newest products and gear.

Attend hunting shows in your area. Locate the booths for your favorite hunting companies and ask their representatives about field-testing opportunities. Demonstrate to them your knowledge of their products and tell them what merchandise you have used from their company. If the representatives are not currently seeking field testers, ask them if they will keep you in mind for future opportunities.

    • 3

Write articles for hunting magazines and websites. Freelance writers often receive free merchandise in exchange for a product review. Start writing articles about hunting and try to get them published. Once you have built a portfolio of published articles, send a letter or email to hunting companies about writing product reviews. Demonstrate to them your knowledge of hunting and your abilities as a writer. To start, ask to field-test products that are relatively inexpensive. No hunting company will send you pricey equipment if you are not an established writer.

Become a field tester for the North American Hunting Club. Members of the club are given the opportunity to become an Official Field Tester. Field Testers must fill out a profile form provided by the NAHC to explain their hunting interests and experience. Once the profile is complete, testers are asked to try various products and offer an evaluation on its design, quality, and effectiveness. Testers keep the product free of charge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to obtain and renew your hunting license every year. Field testers should have a valid hunting license before they try out any products or equipment. Visit your state's official website to find out how to obtain or renew a license.
