Clean the hair and scalp on a regular basis. A clean scalp promotes hair growth. If oil and dirt clog the hair follicles, it is harder for hair to leave the follicle. Use a shampoo that is formulated for your type of hair (dry, oily and normal). Be sure to rinse out all the shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water. Hot water dries the hair and makes it brittle.

Use a hair conditioner. Each time you shampoo, use a conditioner afterward to soften the hair. This helps remove tangles. Once or twice a month, use a deep conditioner that contains protein. Such conditioners can strengthen the hair. Hot oil treatments with olive oil also add moisture to the hair strand and this reduces breakage.

Use very little heat. Hair appliances add heat to the hair, which damages it. Use a blow dryer on a low temperature setting. Also use a lotion, such as Nexxus Heat Protexx, on the hair to protect against heat damage.

Add a lubricant to the hair. Adding a moisturizer to the hair can greatly reduce the amount of split ends and breakage. There are leave-in conditioners and hair moisturizers on the market. Olive oil or coconut oil can also be used. Only use a little because making the hair greasy attracts dirt, leading to clogged hair follicles.

Massage the scalp. This is one of the simplest ways to increase hair growth. Massaging the scalp circulates blood and brings nutrients to the scalp. Place both hands on the head and move your finger in slow, circular movements. The scalp becomes warm and tingles.

Take supplements. Vitamin B complex is a supplement that helps with hair growth. Other supplements are amino acids, which help build protein and grow hair. If you don't get a lot of protein in your diet, taking protein supplements helps.
