How to Clean Up Internal Memory on a PC

A PCs internal memory refers to hard drive space. The hard drive and its capacity has a huge role in determining the speed and efficiency of your computer. If you notice that you're having low memory error messages or that your computer is becoming sluggish, you should clean up your memory. The two basic programs that are used to clean up internal memory are the Disk Cleanup utility tool and the Disk Defragmenter, which are easily accessible and easy to use. Running these programs will go a long way to cleaning up your system's internal memory.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Double-click on the "Computer" or "My Computer" icons to open it.

  2. Step 2

    Right-click on the hard drive, which is normally indicated as the "C:" drive, and a drop-down menu will appear. Click on "Properties."

  3. Step 3

    On the "Properties" screen, click the "General" tab and then click on "Disk Cleanup."

  4. Step 4

    Disk Cleanup will open and calculate the amount of space you can clean on your computer. In the "Files to delete" box, check everything you want to delete.

  5. Step 5

    Click on "OK" to clean the hard drive.

  6. Step 6

    Once Disk Cleanup is finished, close the program and click on the "Tools" tab on the "C:" drive "Properties" screen.

  7. Step 7

    Click on "Defragment Now..." in the "Defragmentation" section.

  8. Step 8

    When the Disk Defragmenter opens, click on "Analyze" to calculate the amount of disk space you'll gain and then click on "Defragment" to put the information fragments on your computer system back together.

  9. Step 9

    Once it finishes, close all open windows and restart your computer to let the system adjust to the fixes.

  • You can also download and install free utility programs that can clean up your system's internal memory. CCleaner, Tweak Now! Reg Cleaner, Sweepi, and Revo Uninstaller are all programs that can be used to help clean up your computer so that it runs fast and smoothly all the time (the links to these programs are in the Resources section).
