Hunting and combat firearms tend to see a lot of rough service in all weathers. Some are carelessly stored and treated with great neglect. The result of either situation is rust on the barrel and other metal parts of a gun. Thankfully, restoring a fine gun to its rust-free appearance is a simple matter and similar to removing rust from any other iron or steel tool.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gun oil
  • Steel wool pad
  • Clean rag
  1. Step 1

Check your gun to make sure its unloaded. Always do this before beginning any gun maintenance.

  2. Step 2

Place a few drops of gun oil onto the rust spots.

  3. Step 3

Scrub the rust spots with the steel wool. Do this gently and take your time. Rushing and using a lot of force might remove the metal's finish.

  4. Step 4

Use a clean rag to wipe excess oil from the gun's metal parts. Inspect the gun. If any rust remains, repeat Steps 1 through 3.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't wash the gun's metal parts seeking to get every last bit of oil off. Wiping away the excess is enough. Oil will serve as a natural protecting agent for a short time and helps to prevent corrosion.
