How to Measure Dial-up Speed
Whether you simply want to make sure your dial-up service is providing the promised speeds you signed up for or you want to see if any new software you installed to help your Internet speed actually makes a difference, you'll need the proper software. Speed test software can be obtained from downloaded software or directly from the web.

Test Your Dial-Up Speeds Using Speedtest.net

Visit the Speedtest website using Internet Explorer or Firefox (see Resources).

Find the words at the top of the page that say "Start Test To Recommended Server" and hover over that message--it will now change to Begin Test. Click on the "Begin Test" message.

Wait for the speed test to complete. First you will receive the ping rate in MS (Milliseconds), then you'll receive the download speed in MB/s and the upload speeds in MB/s. Speedtest will also display the amount of time it will take at current speeds to download different file types of different sizes and a comparison between your service and other providers.

Visit the Broadbandspeedtest website (see Resources) and click on the "Download link" by the bottom left side of the page or at the top right side of the page.

Install the application by clicking on the install file on your PC and following the typical Windows setup offering.

Compare your speed tests with past results by using the last option on the main screen. This is a great option for determining if your speed connection has begun to deteriorate over time or has increased in speed.

Online speed tests should be run several times to make sure the site was not lagging at the time of the test.
