Block against a choke hold. One of the most common methods for a rapist to use is coming from behind and choking his victim. The best way to defend against a choke hold is to prevent it. If you feel someone's arm coming from behind you, drop your chin to your chest and put up your arm on the inside of your attacker; in other words, if his arm is attacking from the right side put up your right arm. Then, drop your body and use your elbow to strike his solar plexus, which is the area at the top of the stomach just below the center of the rib cage. You can then use your hand or elbow to strike the groin area several times. Then, pull your left hip behind your attackers right hip so that your leg is behind his. Using your left arm, elbow your attacker in the throat or face and, using your arm, push your attacker backwards over your leg. The leg will act as a fulcrum, and your arm will act as the lever.

Break a choke hold by using a similar move as described in Step 1. If your attacker has his hand around your mouth or neck from behind, you may only have a few seconds before you pass out, especially if he has some sort of chemical agent on a rag. Put your inside hand on his wrist and drop your weight down. This should either move his hand from your mouth or create a space between your throat and his arm so you can tuck your chin down into your chest, preventing him from choking you. Then, begin attacking him using the moves in Step 1.

Defend against a knife attack. Oftentimes, the attacker will come behind you with a knife and place it against your throat. Take both hands and pull his wrist down while sinking your body into his inside armpit. So, if he is attacking with his right arm, you should sink into his arm pit on that side. With your hands still on his wrist, move the knife toward his body and make him stab himself with the knife. You can then proceed with the moves described in Steps 1 and 2.

Smash his nose with a palm strike, gouge his eyes using your fingers or smash his windpipe with your hand. No matter how big or muscular a guy is, there are some parts of the body that are just sensitive to attack. Obviously, there is the groin, which can be struck with a knee or the ball of the foot. Using your heel and driving it in a downward motion to his knee is also effective. Smashing his ears with your palm or an elbow or driving your elbow into your attacker's temple are also good ways to defend yourself.

Be aware of your surroundings and when you are vulnerable. Places like indoor parking structures or parking lots at night are favorite places for would-be rapists to attack. Having your keys out before you get to your car does two things: it gives you a weapon in your hand, and it saves time once you get to your car.

Take a practical self-defense course. Martial arts like Aikido and Judo can often require fine motor movements to succeed, which is fine in the dojo under a controlled situation, but, when you are being attacked and your heart is racing, your blood is pumping and you are sweating, these are difficult moves to use. Take a class specifically designed for rape prevention or learn practical self-defense like Krav Maga, which relies on simple brute force.

Tips & Warnings

  • When practicing with a partner, have him be very aggressive toward you. This will get you accustomed to dealing with aggressiveness and will keep you from panicking in a real situation.
