How to Make a Swim Cap
While buying a swim cap is an inexpensive endeavor, some individuals may prefer to take the time to make a swim cap. Often, a handmade swim cap is more durable and longer lasting, especially if it is crafted out of waterproof nylon material. With a few materials, you can make a pattern and create a swim cap of your own that can last for several years.
Things You'll Need
- 1 yard of waterproof Lycra nylon fabric
- Spool of nylon thread
- Measuring tape
- Straight pins
- Pattern paper
- Fabric marker or chalk
- Needle
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Pencil
- Scissors
Instructions

1
Measure the circumference of your head with measuring tape right around the area of your forehead. Make sure that the tape fits snug around the head, but that it is not too tight. Note the measurement.
-
2
Measure the crown of your head at the uppermost part of your forehead. Divide both measurements in half.
-
-
3
Take up the pattern paper and draw a semi-circle on the paper with the pencil that has the same dimensions as the measurements of the forehead and crown. The semi-circle should have a flat, straight edge at the bottom. Repeat the process so that you have two, separate semi-circles drawn.
-
4
Cut out the two patterns from the pattern paper. Pin the semi-circle patterns with straight pins to the waterproof Lycra nylon fabric. Mark around the pattern with a fabric marker or chalk.
-
5
Remove the paper patterns and cut along the lines made with the fabric marker or chalk. Place the two cut-out pieces together with the inside of the material facing each other. Pin the pieces together with straight pins.
-
6
Sew the two pieces together closely and along the edge using a needle and thread or a sewing machine. Make sure that the stitches are tight and small to ensure that no water leaks through the cap when you are wearing it. Leave an opening along the two straight edges of the cap.
-
7
Remove the straight pins. Turn the cap right side out. Snip away any excess thread.
