How to Paint Words on Walls

- Letter or word stencils
- Acrylic paint
- Stencil paintbrushes
- Masking tape

Arrange the letters to form the words you want on your wall. Lay them out on a table or floor, and arrange until you like it. Choose a single inspirational word or quote. See Resources below for ideas.

Tape the letters to the wall forming the words you want. The words can be arranged in a single line or with the words trailing downward. Place the words at eye level approximately 48 inches up from the floor, or arrange the words over a doorway.

Pour the paint onto a paper plate. Dip the paintbrush into the paint and dab the brush onto a clean side of the plate, taking off the excess paint. Add more paint to the plate as needed.

Daub the paintbrush over the stencil. Push gently into the cutout letter, covering the area on the wall completely. Dip the brush into the paint as needed to pick up more color. Do not brush the paint over the stencil; it can seep underneath it; smudging the letter. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for all the letters. Let dry completely before removing the stencils from the wall.

Gently peel off the stencil from the wall. If needed, touch up any of the letters with a small paintbrush. Replace the stencil over any of the letters that didn't come out, and redo with more paint.
