How to Set Up a Wireless Router As a Repeater

You can greatly expand your computer network's range by turning your router into a repeater, which will repeat the strongest wireless signal available to give your network the longest available range. DD-WRT, a download-able firmware program, can do this.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the latest version of DD-WRT to your computer. Open the application, which will take you to its "Control Panel."

    • 2

Go to the "Set-Up" tab in the Control Panel, then click on the "Basic setup" sub-tab within it. Input an IP address in the "Local IP Address" box within the "Network Set-Up" section. 192.168.1.1. and 192.168.69.1. are address examples, but the address must be different from that of your router. Click "Apply" to save the changes.

    • 3

Point your browser to the IP address you created. Go to the "Security" tab in the DD-WRT Control Panel and select the "Firewall" sub-panel. Un-check all the boxes in this sub-tab and select "Disable" in the "Firewall Protection" section, then save the changes with the "Apply" button.

Switch to the "Wireless" tab and "Basic settings" sub-tab. Select "Repeater" in the "Wireless Mode" drop-down box, input your wireless network's (router's) name in the "Wireless Network Name" box and choose "Bridged" under "Network Configuration." Save the settings to make the "Virtual Interfaces" section appear.

Click the "DD" button in the "Virtual Interfaces" section. Choose and input a name in the "New Wireless Network" name box. Set the AP isolation to "Disabled" and the Network Configuration to "Bridged" and save the settings.
