How to Decorate With a Patriotic Theme

In home decoration the most popular style is the patriotic theme. Flags, stars, and red and blue coloring are especially complementary with antiques and country-style furniture. Decorate one room or incorporate the patriotic theme throughout the house using patriotic accents and colors such as quilts, pillows and candles.

Instructions

1. Choose a room to decorate with the patriotic theme. The kitchen, family room or a bedroom are the most common rooms to decorate. Figure out what items you'd like to replace and which items can be refurbished to give a new appearance.

2. Paint a wall in the room of your choice using patriotic colors such as red or blue. When painting with dark colors, it is often best to paint only one wall. Painting a whole room with dark colors makes the room appear smaller.

3. Hang a flag on a wall. For a country style, hang an antique flag; for a more contemporary look, consider a picture of a flag in a modern frame.

4. Use accent rugs in the room in red, white and blue colors. The rug might have stars and stripes on it or may be a solid color to accent the color of the wall.

5. Place decorative stars around the room. Set a couple wooden stars found at your local craft store on a table or hang a few stars on a wall opposite the flag or in place of the flag.

6. Use various items to further accent the room, such as red and blue candles, either solid colored pillows or ones with stars or flags on them, table runners with a patriotic theme and a quilt with flags or stars on it. Place the quilt over a quilt rack or hang over a couch.
