Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small bit of sponge
  • White acrylic paint
  • Lightweight cardboard
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Pink acrylic paint
  • New pencil with eraser
  • Wood skewer
  • Fine line black permanent marker
  • Orange acrylic paint
  • 1/2 inch wood triangle
  • 2 wood teardrop shapes, 2 inches long
  • 2 wood hearts, 1 inch
  • Craft glue
  • Hot glue
  • Blue felt
  • Sewing machine
  • Blue embroidery floss
  • 2 green sparkle pom-poms, 1/2 inch
  • Plaid homespun fabric
  1. Step 1

Sponge paint the entire lightbulb white, including the metal screw end. Let it dry and repeat for complete even coverage. Lay the lightbulb on a piece of lightweight cardboard and trace around the shape, not including the screw top. Round the smaller part of the bulb so the shape resembles a bowling pin. Reduce the shape by sketching a 1/4 inch inside the line, then cut out. This is the face and tummy pattern for the penguin light bulb.

  2. Step 2

Place the shape on the lightbulb and trace around it. Paint the light bulb using the black acrylic paint, leave the face and tummy white. Let the paint dry and repeat. You may need several coats to get a solid black. Paint both sides of the wood teardrops using the black acrylic paint. Paint both sides of the wood hearts and triangle using the orange acrylic paint. Let the paint dry.

  3. Step 3

Dip the eraser end of a new pencil into pink acrylic paint and stamp two cheeks onto the face of the penguin lightbulb. Dip the flat end of the wood skewer into black acrylic paint and stamp two eyes on the face. Let the cheeks and eyes dry thoroughly before continuing. Draw a dash line above each eye with a fine line black permanent marker. These are the penguin's eyebrows. Dip the pointed tip of the wood skewer in white acrylic paint and dot a highlight on each eye.

  4. Step 4

Hot glue the orange-painted triangle between the cheeks, with the pointed end down, for the penguin lightbulb beak. Hot glue the two orange-painted wood hearts to the bottom of the penguin for the feet. The heart bumps should be facing forward for the toes. Hot glue the black-painted teardrop wings on each side of the penguin body with the point end down.

  5. Step 5

Cut a piece of blue felt 3 inches wide by 5 inches long for the penguin hat. Fold the felt in half, matching the 3-inch sides. Sew the 3-inch sides together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Trim the seam close to the stitching. Turn the tube right side out. Fold one end up a 1/2 inch to form a hat brim. Apply craft glue to the screw top of the lightbulb. Slip the brim end of the hat over the screw top. Cut a 12-inch length of blue embroidery floss. Tie and knot the floss around the top of the hat, closing the hat top and creating a top knot. Bring the ends together and tie an overhand knot. This will produce a loop hanger for your ornament.

  6. Step 6

Cut a piece of plaid homespun fabric 1 1/2 inches wide by 11 inches long. Tie the strip around the neck of the penguin lightbulb for a scarf. Hot glue a sparkle pom-pom on each side of the head, below the hat brim. These are your penguin's earmuffs.
