When deciding on a computer-related career, a decision needs to be made as far as specialization. Most people choose popular technologies, such as Java, and jobs, such as Oracle database administration, Windows system administration, and other similar areas that thousands before have picked. Others, who wish to specialize in a high-demand niche, choose to specialize in a high-demand software niche that requires hard-to-get training, such as Business Objects and Documentum. By choosing a narrow specialization to focus upon, a computer specialist can make much more than the average computer professional.

1. Build up a solid foundation in all areas of computer technology. For example, it is not necessary to know the exact Cisco commands to set up BGP routing, but it is very helpful to know how BGP routing works in the network. Because most software touches many parts of computer technology in a complex way, it is important to understand how everything works.

2. Get a computer job in a more general specialization, such as Java programmer. To break into a software niche, software licenses and training in niche software need to be purchased, which can often run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. To gain knowledge in a software niche without spending money, it is best to gain access to an employer's software installation and have the employer pay for training in the niche software.

3. Ask to be sponsored by the employer to take certification exams in the software niche. In a few cases, certification is required in order to open a technical support case with the software provider.

4. Get promoted to specialize as a developer or administrator focusing on the niche software. After the promotion, the job has been converted into a computer specialist position.

5. Consider starting a career as a consultant in the software niche when it is time to look for another job as a computer specialist. The money made as a consultant is often much higher than as an employee.
