How to Build a Ferret Shed

Ferrets are active animals that need a lot of space to romp around for their health and happiness. Building a ferret shed that gives them ample space for living while letting them feel safe and comfortable is simple with basic handyman knowledge for building.

Things You'll Need

• (1) 8- by 4-foot sheet of plywood
• (1) sheet of 3- by 2-foot weld mesh, 1 inch thick
• (1) 8-foot timber 4 by 1 inches
• (7) 8-foot timber 2 by 1 inches
• (3) 2 inch hinges
• Screws
• Exterior white gloss paint
• Exterior wood finish
• Saw
• Ruler
• Drill
• Staple gun
• Wire cutters
• Paint brush
• Baking tray
• Two wire hooks

How to Build a Ferret Stand

1. Measure the plywood into six sections: two 2- by 2-foot sections for the sides, two 4- by 2-foot sections for the front and bottom, one 1-foot by 9-inch by 4-foot section for the back and one 4- by 4 1/2-foot section for the top.

2. Cut the plywood sections. Saw the windows in the front and back at 1 foot by 2 foot.

3. Staple the mesh over the windows in place with the staple gun. Cut excess mesh with wire cutters.

4. Saw a "toilet" where the ferret will go to the bathroom. Make the hole 7 inches long and 3 inches wide in the right side of the bottom panel to allow excrement to fall through. Staple mesh in place with staple gun, cutting excess mesh with wire cutters.

5. Drill a hole into each 4-inch end of the baking tray. This should be centered on approximately 1/4 inch from the top.

6. Center the hooks underneath the floor to hold the tray under the "toilet" and screw them in. The hooks should face inward to the toilet and secure the tray on the holes drilled in Step 5.

7. Cut the 4-inch by 1-foot timber into four posts of equal length. The length can be made shorter if you want the cage lower.

8. Secure the top half of the post with screws into the front and back panels. This will be screwed into the exterior sides.

9. Secure the bottom of the shed to the front and back, screwing them in place through the width of the panel.

10. Slide the sides of the shed in place and secure with screws from the bottom into the width of the panel.

11. Measure and cut a wall from the plywood that will slide in place 1 foot from the left side. Cut a circular hole 3 inches in diameter about 6 inches from the floor of this wall.

12. Slide in place and secure with screws.

13. Screw hinges into the interior back wall and the top of the shed.

14. Paint inside and allow to dry before adding toys to your ferret's new home.

Tips & Warnings

• Use sawdust to line the tray toilet for easy clean up.

• Make sure there are no exposed screws or nails that could hurt your ferret.
