How to Trace Who Purchased a Money Order
A money order is a popular and convenient way to transfer money from one person to another. It is well known that the person purchasing the money order can track and trace it to ensure it reaches it's final destination. But what do you do if you are on the receiving end of the money order and want to track the money order back to the person who purchased it?

1
Determine what company is responsible for the money order that was purchased. For example, was it purchased from Western Union, Money Gram, or US Postal Service, for example?
-
2
Contact the company that is responsible for the money order. If there is no telephone number listed on the money order, visit their website to obtain a telephone number.
-
-
3
Provide the company with the money order number. The money order number will be located on the bottom of the money order. Advise the company that you would like to trace the money order back to the place it was purchased from.
-
4
Contact the manager at the place the money order was purchased from. Provide him with the money order number and advise him that you need to get the date and time that the money order was purchased. Most stores keep log receipts for their money order sales that record this information. The manager might not pull this information for you unless you are a member of law enforcement.
-
5
Contact local law enforcement if you believe there has been any kind of illegal activity surrounding the purchase of the money order. If the location that sold the money order has a video camera in place, local law enforcement will be able to obtain video footage from the date and time the money order was purchased. This will put a face to the individual who purchased the money order.
