Make your own dental tooth hand puppets to teach children about tooth care and dental decay. The hand puppets may be used at home when you are helping children learn how to brush their own teeth. They can also be incorporated into a self-care or health class for children as young as preschoolers. The puppets can be used while reading dental heath children's books, or to help children become comfortable with the idea of visiting the dentist.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pair of white tights
  • Pair of yellow tights
  • Egg carton
  • Scissors
  • Cotton balls
  • Black permanent marker
  • Glue
  • Floss
  • Ribbon
  1. Step 1

Cut the bottom of a pair of old tights to make a stretch puppet for the hand. White tights are used for the healthy, "happy" teeth. Use yellow tights to represent decaying, "sad" teeth. The tights can be cut to be short puppets and stop at the wrist, or cut the tights to make the puppet stretch to the mid-forearm. Trim the cut mark to remove any threads. Run a bead of glue around the bottom on the inside and fold the material to make a clean edge.

  2. Step 2

Break up a cardboard egg carton with hands or scissors. Take one egg cup and turn it upside down. Glue three cotton balls to the flat part of the egg carton cup, which will be the top of the tooth.

  3. Step 3

Squeeze lines of glue down the sides of the egg carton cup. Bunch up the tights as you would when putting them on. Slide the tights over the egg carton cup, placing the cotton balls in the toe part of the tights.

  4. Step 4

Draw two eyes and a mouth on the puppet. The white puppet should be a happy puppet with a smile. Draw unhappy faces on the yellow puppets. Or use the permanent marker to draw cracks and lines in the white puppet and add an unhappy face, to depict the tooth puppet with decay.

  5. Step 5

Draw an arch to form the bottom of the tooth. Decorate the puppet with dental floss hair to make it more interesting to children. A ribbon or sewing trim may be added to the bottom of the puppet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make puppets in different sizes to represent baby teeth and adult teeth. Stray socks or mittens may be used instead of tights. Incorporate a clean, unused toothbrush into the puppet show by adding craft eyes or drawing eyes on the toothbrush.
  • Do not make children fearful of dental hygiene; keep stories told with the puppets positive.
