No matter how well shingles are put on a roof, there will always be some roof shingles that come off the roof or get damaged. Strong winds are usually to blame for prying shingles off of roofs. If you have some roof shingles that have fallen off and need to be repaired, there is no need to call in a roofer. In fact, you can easily repair the roof shingles that have fallen on your own.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Roofing tar
  • Hammer
  • Prybar
  • Roofing nails
  • Utility knife
  • Ladder
  1. Step 1

Assess the shingles for damage. If you have roof shingles that have fallen, you should look them over to see if they can be used again or if they are too damaged to be placed back on the roof. If there are no rips or tears, you will be able to use them again. If they are too damaged, you will need to use a new shingle to repair the vacant spot left on the roof.

  2. Step 2

Remove the old nails. Use a ladder to get on your roof and find the area where the shingles came from. There should be nails from the shingles left in the roof that you will need to remove with a hammer or prybar.

  3. Step 3

Remove the shingle above your work area. You will want to use your prybar or a utility knife to gently lift up the shingle that is immediately above where the fallen shingle used to lay. You need to do this because this shingle will lay on the top of the shingle you are putting back on the roof. You may also need to remove any nails on this shingle that are in your way.

  4. Step 4

Replace the fallen shingle. Take the shingle that fell, or the replacement shingle if the original was too damaged, and lay it back in the spot it came from. You will want to put a little roofing tar or roofing cement under it to keep it in place. Also attach it with four 3/4-inch roofing nails. Be sure to keep the shingle that is above it out of the way.

  5. Step 5

Reattach the shingle above it. Once you have replaced the fallen shingle you will want to reattached the shingle above it. If you took out any nails from it, be sure to put those back in. You will also want to apply a little roofing cement or roofing tar to it so that it will attach to the replaced shingle. It is also a good idea to put a thin line of roofing tar or cement along the edge lines of those two shingles.
