Use your pliers to turn the exposed bathtub stem clockwise all the way. This will release pressure and any water that is still in the water line. Use your deep well socket set to find the appropriate size socket and ratchet to fit on the nut at the back of the bathtub stem. Turn the stem counterclockwise to remove it. Take the stem with you to the hardware store and purchase a new stem identical to the one that you removed.

Install the new bathtub stem using the deep well socket, and tighten completely. Use your pliers to turn the stem clockwise to the off position. Replace the metal cover plate, the escutcheon ring, the handle and the plastic center cover plate. Turn the water back on at the main. Test your new stem by turning the water on in the tub.
Tips & Warnings
Do not remove the stem until you have turned off the water at the main. The water will shoot out of the water pipe if you take the stem out before turning off the water.
