Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. Upload a photo that has few hair strays and is lighter in color. This process will work on darker hair, but not as well as on blonde or gray hair.

    • 2

Mask the hair. This process selects the area of the hair you want to color. Pressing the "Q" key on your keyboard will select the masking brush. It is up to you how much of the hair you run the brush over. To color the entire head of hair, run the brush over the entire head.

    • 3

Press "Q" again followed by control-shift "I." This will give the appearance of perforated edges along the hair line and the area you masked. Once you see this you can "Select Layer Color." With this option you can select the color for the hair.

    • 4

Soften the color by selecting the "Soft Light" option from the "Layers" drop-down menu. This will give the color a more realistic appearance. If the color looks too cartoonish before selecting "Soft Light," don't worry, it's supposed to.

Clean up the picture. By selecting the color and masking the hair, color spilled outside the picture. To clean up any areas you don't want colored in, get a feathered brush from the brush menu. Use this brush to swipe over areas of the picture you don't want colored. The end result is realistically altered hair.
