Hanging wallpaper border can change the entire look of a room. Adding this type of border is a little more difficult than a straight edge, because scalloped edges can tear easily. The key to having it stay in place is to use the right amount of wallpaper paste. Even if it is a self-stick type border, it is best to use paste. Take your time smoothing out the paste and air bubbles to achieve the best results.

Things You'll Need:

    Up and at It

  1. Step 1

The walls should be clean and dust-free to ensure adhesion. Measure the length of the area be papered, and add a few extra feet to account for cuts. Buy the right type of paste; there is paste to paper a border over paint, and another for adding it over wallpaper. Ask someone at the home center or paint store for assistance.

  2. Step 2

Use a laser level to mark the line if the scalloped edge is going toward the ceiling or trim. If the straight side will run parallel to the ceiling, use the ceiling as the guide line. You'll probably need a helper to hold the wallpaper.

  3. Step 3

Unroll border and place right-side down on a tarp. Brush on paste, and quickly start hanging the border on the wall. Be sure to apply the paste to all the edges of the border.

  4. Step 4

Start by hanging the border over a doorway or in a corner as the ends will probably not match perfectly. Take the wallpaper scraper, hold it on an angle, and push from the straight edge to the scalloped edge. This will force out excess paste and air bubbles. Do not try to push the scraper the other way or you'll tear the scalloping.

  5. Step 5

Work your way down the border scraping out all excess paste. Clean the scraper with a sponge and warm water occasionally to prevent buildup. Keep the edge straight at all times.

  6. Step 6

To start a new piece, cut it at the part of the pattern where the last piece ended. Butt or overlap the ends a tiny bit. Use extra paste to make the ends stay flat. Continue until the entire border is hung.

  7. Step 7

Wipe down the border with clean water and sponge again. Allow to dry for a few hours before attempting any touch-ups.
