Instructions

    • 1

Measure the square footage of the room you need to paint.

    • 2

Choose a flat latex-based paint. Flat paint doesn't reflect light, making it a perfect choice for the color black. Look at the container to find out how many square feet the container will cover. Buy as many cans as you need to cover the walls in your room.

    • 3

Prep the room by removing any furniture. If you have big items you cannot get out of the room easily, you can push them together into the middle of the room and cover them. Use a painters drop cloth to cover the flooring. Also, remove any pictures or posters from the walls.

    • 4

Apply painter's tape to the baseboards and trim, and along the ceiling. This will help your edges look smooth while protecting the baseboard and ceiling from getting any black paint on them.

    • 5

Prep yourself by putting on an old outfit. You may also want to put on some plastic gloves, as you are bound to get paint on your hands.

    • 6

Mix your paint. Most likely, the paint store will give you a stick to use to mix the paint.

    • 7

Pour some paint in a flat pan so that you can dip your roller in it. They make special trays for this, and you may want to purchase one.

    • 8

Use your roller to paint your walls, but don't get too close to the edges. You will do that next. Paint in a crisscross fashion. This method helps prevent paint lines from showing.

    • 9

Use a paintbrush to paint the edges of your walls. Make sure you work a little more slowly than you did with the roller. Place the bristles up against the edge, and paint toward the center of the wall.

    • 10

Wait for the paint to dry. This could take up to four hours. Then paint a second coat the same way you did the first.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the outlet covers if you think you might get paint on them. You can prime your walls first, but it is not necessary with black paint. Don't replace the furniture until all of the paint has dried.
