In Texas, starting a home daycare is time consuming and requires a bit more work and planning than in other states. By following the guidelines set out by the Texas Department of Family Services, you can improve your chances of getting licensed and starting off your business on the right foot.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which kind of licensing you'll need. If you plan to care for six or fewer children, you can apply for a Registered Child Care Home License. If you will care for between six and 12 children, you will need a Licensed Child Care Home License. You must include your own children in these numbers if you will be caring for them as well.

    • 2

Complete application Form No. 2919, Request for a Registration Permit. This form is available from the Texas Department of Family Services. A list of local branch offices can be found in the Resources section of this article, or you can call (713) 940-3009 for more information.

    • 3

Fill out Form No. 2971, Request for Criminal Background Check. This authorizes the state to investigate your criminal history as well as those of any employees you plan to hire.

    • 4

Obtain certification for infant and child CPR and first aid in rescue breathing and choking. Both of these must be submitted with your application. The classes are generally available at most community colleges or at local hospitals.

    • 5

Submit a copy of your high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate. This information is required for certification or licensing.

    • 6

Take all the paperwork to your local Texas Family Services branch. The staff will review the information and make a decision within a few weeks.
