CBR motorcycles, just like all other motorcycles, must have their air filters cleaned often for maximum engine performance. This process is quite easy, and requires little mechanical skill. However, it is quite messy, so the process should be performed outside.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket of hot, soapy water
  • Garden hose
  • Water faucet
  • Air filter oil

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seat from the motorcycle by inserting the key in the seat lock, twisting it, and pulling the rear of the seat up. Set the seat aside.

    • 2

Pull up on the air filter box lock (a small bar with springs) until the box clicks and slides out.

    • 3

Reach in and unscrew the air filter mounting bolt. This is usually capped with a wing-nut and can easily be hand loosened and removed.

    • 4

Pull the air filter out of the box. Then, remove its plastic framing and set it aside.

    • 5

Dip the air filter in the bucket of hot, soapy water, squeezing and twisting it to work all the grease and dirt out of it. Clean the filter as thoroughly as possible.

    • 6

Use a garden hose to rinse all the soap out of the air filter. Then let the filter dry out fully before continuing.

    • 7

Spread a good amount of filter oil onto the air filter and work the oil around until the filter is completely soaked. Then replace the air filter's framework.

    • 8

Insert the filter back into the box on the motorcycle, and replace its mounting bolt. Then, replace the air filter lid by clicking it into place, and replace the seat on the motorcycle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply plenty of filter oil to the air filter. This oil is what makes the filter work.

  • Always use caution and stay aware of pinch points when working around movable motorcycle parts.
