Renting professional costumes can be very costly. With a little ingenuity, many costume pieces can be created from simple supplies. These chicken feet can be made using felt, paper towel rolls and a spare pair of shoes and would make a great addition to any fine-feathered costume.

Things You'll Need

  • One pair of slip-on shoes
  • Four 8 1/2" by 11" pieces of orange felt
  • Cardboard paper towel roll
  • Glue gun
  • Glue stick

Instructions

  1. Making the Feet

    • 1
      Attaching felt to shoe

Attach felt to the toe and upper front of the shoes with the glue gun by running a bead of glue along the edge of the shoe. Cut away excess fabric along the bottom.

    • 2
      Folding over edge

Turn under the felt at the top of shoe and glue. To make the felt turn under more smoothly, cut short slits in the edge of the fabric.

    • 3
      Covered shoe

Cover the back of the shoe in the same manner, until the entire shoe is covered in orange felt.

    • 4
      Paper towel roll pieces

Cut a paper towel roll into three equal pieces and then cut these pieces in half lengthwise. Cut off the top two corners on each piece.

    • 5
      Covered paper towel rolls

Cut felt to fit the roll pieces and attach the felt with the glue gun.

    • 6
      Talons attached

Attach "talons" to the front of the shoe with the glue gun, placing the cut corners next to the shoe. It may be necessary to hold the talons in place until they're firmly attached.

Tips & Warnings

  • Basic slip-on shoes work best. Shoes that tie or have too much detail will not yield good results.

  • Make sure to trim the felt carefully along the bottom of the shoe. Excess fabric could make walking difficult.
