Uncommon baby names add flair to your child's persona and can be a great distinguishing factor when they grow up. Another nice thing about uncommon baby names is that they give you the chance to dig deep into your family history to find time honored and cherished names that are less common in current times. Sometimes it can be difficult to find a starting point when you are searching for unique baby names and even more difficult to finally settle on one. Contained in this piece are steps that you can follow to end up with one of a kind baby names for your child.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get something to keep track of the baby names that you come across, otherwise you'll never remember them and may forget some really good ones. This can be a pen and pad or even a computer. Having something to record the names will help you be as organized as you can be, and will also let you scan and evaluate as many baby names as possible. Keep your records in a safe place so they aren't lost or damaged.

  2. Step 2

Search back into your family history to see if there are any really cool uncommon baby names that interest you. By doing this you'll come across names that aren't popular in this day and age but may have a special meaning in your family. You can use many different tools to do this but the public library is one of the best resources. Talking to any elders in your family like grandparents is another great way. What you are looking for is a name with special significance and also a name that you don't hear very often anymore.

  3. Step 3

Make another list of your favorite places and things to do, then see if any of them could be converted into uncommon baby names. Most of these things will be nouns which make great baby names. Don't shoot for anything too strange or weird but really put some time and consideration into this process. Some people have chosen beautiful baby names from European cities or countries, and this is just one example.

  4. Step 4

Look to classic literature to find uncommon baby names that are both prestigious and will stand the test of time. For example, Demi Moore named her daughter "Scout" after the girl in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." With so many literary works that have characters with unique names the possibilities are endless.

  5. Step 5

After you've gathered a number of baby names, look them over with your husband or wife and decide together on which one would be the best. Take into account as many factors as possible like - Will it stand the test of time? Will it cause the child ridicule in the future? Is it a strong name? Once you've answered all of your questions together you can feel comfortable that you have chosen the best baby name possible.
