Choosing the right color carpet seems like it should be easy. However, it's a big decision because once it's installed, you'll be living with it for years to come. Important considerations are the use of the space, existing color schemes and price. Color choices are diverse and include the muted shades of the new, eco-friendly woven wool and berbers. You can also select colors in checkerboard patterns, stripe patterns and feminine florals. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Choosing the Right Color

    • 1

Play it safe with beige or light brown carpeting. These colors look great with white walls and work with most colors, even if your couch is green or red. If you have pets, let's face it: A beige carpet with a mottled, spotty texture would be a very good choice.

    • 2

Choose a shade within your existing or planned color theme. For example, if your walls are a light shade of taupe, choose a slightly darker shade of taupe for your carpeting to create a rich, multi-layer statement. With dark-colored walls such as cranberry or dark green, use a lighter color rug, otherwise the room will appear to shrink.

    • 3

Make a color choice that is relatively neutral, unless you have a specific use that calls for bright colors. A game room, for instance, might look great with a red or black carpet.

    • 4

Try a carpeting color visualizer. They're available online and allow you to choose wall colors, carpeting colors and textures for any room in your house. See Resources below.

    • 5

Visit a carpeting retailer. Bring some carpeting samples home and lay them around on the floor you plan to cover. Make a choice based on how the carpet samples work with wall colors, your personal preferences, cost, and type of room.
