How to Build a Floating Patio
Maybe you have a hidden spot in your garden that is the perfect place for an outdoor getaway with a small bench or patio set. Or perhaps your current patio is in a bad location where it receives too much sun or doesn't have enough privacy. You can build a floating patio to answer these needs quickly and simply. Floating patios are not attached to a building like traditional patios, and they usually require no concrete pouring or footings. Depending on the size, they can be built in an afternoon. Remove any debris and plants from the area where your patio will be. Remove any rocks, because they will crack the pavers as they settle.

Break the top layer of soil up with the shovel, removing any other rocks you uncover. Look for large roots that may regrow, and remove them as well. Use the rake to level the ground. Stomp it down and tamp it well with the shovel, checking the level as necessary to keep the area flat.

Place your first paver in place and gently push it into the soil. Working in rows, place and press each paver, leaving a 1/4 inch space between each one. Continue until all the pavers are placed.

Pour sand onto the patio and use the broom to sweep it into the spaces between pavers. The sand will need to be even with the top of the pavers, so continue pouring the sand and sweeping until all the spaces are full. Sweep away any excess sand.

Tips & Warnings
Check your patio after rain or wind storms during the first season after you have built it, and add more sand as needed.
