How to Line Dentures

If you have full dentures, it is important to properly align them with your gums. Lining up dentures properly keeps then in place and prevents rattling. Poorly lined up dentures may fall out, prevent you from speaking clearly or make it difficult to eat hard, sticky or hot foods. Improperly lined dentures also promote sagging and wrinkles in the face, making you look older. To avoid this, use adhesive to make your dentures stick to your gums, holding the dentures steady to fasten the adhesive. Aligning them properly avoids the embarrassment of rattling or loose teeth and allows you to talk and eat naturally.

Instructions

  1. Line Your Dentures

    • 1

Apply adhesive cream to your denture plate. The denture plate is the pink outer surface that keeps your dentures in place. Use a medically approved dental adhesive cream, such as Poligrip, and dot it around the circumference of the denture plate. Begin dotting the paste 2 to 3 centimeters from the edge of the denture plate.

    • 2

Add more adhesive cream to the center of the denture plate. Squeeze the cream on the center of the denture plate and make a thin line with the cream. Squeeze out the cream to the edge of the denture plate in the opposite direction of the fake teeth.

    • 3

Line up the dentures with your gums. Take the dentures by the teeth and line it up with the pits of your gums. There are small pits where you teeth used to be; make sure to keep the dentures aligned with the pits on your denture plate. Do not press it in yet.

    • 4

Place your dentures on your copings, the metal hooks your dentist used to replace your teeth. Slide the dentures onto the copings, keeping them aligned with the pits of your gums. Let the dentures slip onto your gums.

    • 5

Press the dentures against your gums. Using both hands, firmly press the dentures against your gums. Keep the pressure steady for one minute. Release your fingers after one minute and open your mouth. If the dentures do not shake, they are properly aligned. If there is some looseness, press your dentures against your gums for another minute and recheck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dry your dentures before use. This allows the dentures to stick better. If you are still having trouble fitting your dentures, ask your dentist for assistance.

  • Do not press the dentures firmly against your gums until it is aligned. The adhesive cream will attach to your gums, making the alignment uneven.
