How to Reduce the Discomfort of Dry Eyes

Dry eyes can be uncomfortable and cause the sufferer to experience pain, light sensitivity, a gritty sensation, itchiness and redness. Dry eyes occur when your tear ducts are not producing enough tears. Several conditions are linked to dry eyes, including eye infections, menopause, medication use and arthritis.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear eye protection. Put on sunglasses if you are suffering from dry eyes. This will ease the discomfort by reducing your exposure to sunlight and wind.

    • 2

Use artificial tears, which are available over the counter and can be used as many as eight times per day. A popular brand of lubricating eye drops is TheraTears.

    • 3

Stay out of the dry heat. Walking into low-humidity environments can worsen the pain of dry eyes. Use a humidifier to relieve the symptoms. Air-conditioned homes and buildings can also cause dry eyes. You should especially avoid sitting near an air vent that blows into your face.

    • 4

Take a supplement. Fish oil and flax seed oil supplements have both been found to reduce the discomfort of dry eyes. You can purchase these products from any vitamin supplement retailer and use them daily to naturally lubricate the eyes.

    • 5

Blink often. When you make an effort to blink, you are spreading the moisture over your eyes. Give your eyes significant rest, especially if you are watching TV or staring at your computer screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should speak to your doctor if you continue to suffer from dry eyes. If he is able to treat the underlying cause of the condition, you may find relief.
